This procedure traditionally involves an open procedure with a large incision and 7 to 10 days in hospital. The aim is to create a type of "hammock" upon which the bladder neck can rest when coughing or sneezing etc. This procedure can now be performed using the laparoscope, allowing patients to be discharged much earlier (1 to 2 days) with significantly less pain and discomfort.
A diagramatic representation of the "hammock" created by elevating the vagina for the bladder neck to rest upon. |
![]() Three white sutures have been placed each side to elevate the vagina. The bladder is in the middle of the picture. |
